Mettmann is the county town of Mettmann in the Niederbergisches Land. It belongs to the administrative district of Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. Mettmann is located about 15 km east of Düsseldorf on the first heights of the Rhenish slate mountains,the Mettmanner Lößterrassen. Historically and according to today's regional consciousness, the city belongs to the Bergisches Land. The lowest point in the city area with 75 m above sea level is located in the Neanderthal in the area of the museum, the highest at the city border to Wülfrath (203 m above sea level, intersection Meiersberger Str./Mettmanner Str.). The mountainous city of Wuppertal is located about 10 kilometres east of Mettmann, the Ruhr areasmetropole Essen is about 20 kilometres away in a northerly direction, and the city of Cologne is about 30 kilometres south of the city of Mettmann. With a population density of 911 inhabitants per km2, Mettmann is the second-thinnest town in Mettmann County after the neighbouring town of Wülfrath. Coming from Wülfrath, the Düssel flows in the area of the Neanderthal through Mettmann era and marks on a few kilometers the border to the neighboring towns of Haan and Erkrath.
